In the winter of his life Johansen began innovating designs for the future, “for a time when a new species of architecture - nanoarchitecture - will emerge.”

As nanoarchitecture evolves and eventually becomes readily available - inevitable, according to Johansen and many others - concerns and questions arise. What impact will nanoarchitecture have on architecture, and on society?

Of crucial importance are questions and issues regarding the ethical use and international regulation of nanoarchitecture, and the positive and negative effects it will have on the natural world.

Known to be “50 years ahead of his time” Johansen’s radical designs - based upon years of researching biomorphics, astrophysics, electromagnetics, and the nanotechnology sciences, and influenced by his studies of engineering, analytical psychology, and integrated philosophies - will continue to inspire architects and designers for decades to come.

The image above is from an animation that has been produced about Johansen’s nanoarchitectural
designs. “These buildings, created from the subatomic level, will transform the built environment.”
